Week One Highlights

Our arrival was complicated by the fact that all 5 of the Callander’s checked bags did not arrive. While we were staying at the KAKN radio station in Naknek (home base for the trip) the sewage lift station pump failed. Pastor Jeff Swanson and our two Pilots spent much of a day removing and repairing the pump. Needless to say a most undesirable task! 36 hours later all of the bags made it to Naknek.

Our first VBS village was Ekwok, population of 100. It took two planes to fly us and the gear in on Sunday afternoon. A service was conducted with 13 in attendance substantially above the normal of 2-4. That evening we hosted a well-attended hot dog cookout. On Monday night the community asked us to put on a service for the adults. One adult and two teenagers came. I had to lead the singing (WAY out of my comfort zone) and preached a brief challenge, The VBS was held in a small chapel which also became our living headquarters for the week. We averaged between 10 and 12 kids and when one considers the village school only has 13 total it was really remarkable.

Our days always include personal and team devotions as well as a prayer walk through the village each morning. We established great relations throughout the time there. One of the highlights was Judy delivering us a massive King Salmon filet which took up the entire grill. You can now call us the 4 “little Piggies”.

FYI...
I will not be on the Saturday morning ride the next three weeks. June 22 I will need to get back super early -- like 10:00 -- so I may stop by to see you off, but won't be able to ride with you.

June 29 I will be in St. Louis with family.

July 6 is Greenwood.

AW, I am out of town that weekend. Looks like a good event, maybe next year. We can take the IC3 motorhome!!
